"The first day I stepped on the set of 'Selma' I began to feel like this was bigger than a movie," sagte Common während seiner Dankesrede, nachdem ihn kein Geringerer als Prince vorstellte.

"As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights Movement, I realized I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. 'Selma' has awakened my humanity."

Common dankte zudem verschiedenen Menschen, “We look to the future and we want to create a better world. Now is our time to change the world. Selma is now.”

“I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing film that honors such amazing people that did great work and is so connected to what’s happening right now,” fügte John Legend hinzu. “We still are in solidarity with those that are out there fighting for justice right now and we’re so grateful to write this song hopefully as an inspiration to them.”

John Legend und Common wurden das erste Mal für einen Golden Globe Award nominiert. Unter anderem setzte sich "Glory" gegen Songs wie Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat" (aus "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1"), Lana Del Rey's "Big Eyes" (aus "Big Eyes"), Patti Smith und Lenny Kaye's "Mercy Is" (aus "Noah") und Sia und Greg Kurstin's "Opportunity" (aus "Annie") durch.
